A sports influencer does not have to be a professional athlete, and a professional athlete does not automatically make a good creator. Brands need the overlap: credible sports context, useful content, the right audience and the ability to work commercially.

Do not start with follower count

Follower count is a filter, not a verdict. Two 30K accounts can differ dramatically in audience geography, sport, storytelling, reputation and the quality of assets they can make for a brand.

CheckQuestion
FitDoes the product naturally belong in this creator’s world?
ContentWould the brand want to reuse the asset?
AudienceIs the community relevant?
ReputationDoes the creator fit the brand’s risk profile?
RightsCan the content be used beyond the creator’s feed?

Framework: The Champions creator-selection checklist.

Search by product context

A running brand may find value in runners, triathletes, coaches, physios or creators documenting a first marathon. Start with the situations in which the product belongs, rather than a generic influencer category.

Micro creators matter

IAB UK’s 2025 UK & Europe report says 86% of surveyed marketers collaborate with micro-influencers. Smaller creators can give a campaign more creative variants and communities to test, although size alone never guarantees better performance.

Build a shortlist, then watch the content

Once the filters are done, watch recent videos. Listen to how the creator speaks. Check the ratio of commercial to organic posts. Look for the ability to hold attention without a production crew.

Where to search

Platforms, search engines and manual research all work. You can shorten the first step with The Champions athlete database, then use our seven-point influencer selection guide.

The bottom line

The best sports influencer is not necessarily the largest account in the spreadsheet. It is the creator whose sport, story, audience and content give the brand a credible place to participate.
