For a brand, a sports marketing agency should do more than introduce famous athletes. It should translate a marketing objective into the right combination of athletes, content, distribution, rights and activation.

Sometimes the answer is sponsorship. Sometimes it is ten smaller athlete creators producing content. Sometimes it is one long-term ambassador. Those are different products and should be planned differently.

What can a sports agency deliver for a brand?

Framework: The Champions practical model, not an official industry classification.

Start with the objective, not the athlete

“We want a famous athlete” is not a strategy. Decide whether you need content, reach, image rights, sales, event participation or a long-term brand association. Then build the shortlist.

One star or a group of smaller athletes?

Neither is automatically better. A major name concentrates attention. A portfolio of smaller athletes can create more stories, communities and assets to test. IAB UK’s 2025 UK & Europe report says 86% of surveyed marketers collaborate with micro-influencers, while paid amplification, long-term partnerships and UGC were among the areas expected to attract investment in 2026.

What should the agency own?

Research, outreach, negotiation, briefs, contracts, content coordination, rights, publication and reporting. If the brand still has to chase every athlete separately, the operating problem has not really been solved.

Athletes are not billboards

The strongest work finds an overlap between product, sport and the athlete’s real life. That gives the creator something credible to say and gives the brand an asset that feels native to the environment.

Where can brands find athletes?

Start with The Champions athlete database, then evaluate the shortlist using our guide to choosing an athlete for a brand campaign. For the broader model, see sports marketing for brands.

The bottom line

A sports agency should reduce friction between a brand idea and a real athlete campaign. The value is not access alone; it is selection, execution and turning partnerships into useful marketing assets.
